Movies SO Bad they’re Good (or Just Plain Bad)

In the last year or so my friend group would do wine Wednesdays that consisted of drinking wine and having our “host” spin the wheel of movies (and yes it’s exactly what you think, a big game wheel that was dry erased that had names of movies written down) to pick out a random movie to watch that night. Most of the movies that were chosen were unheard of to me before but definitely was best to watch with a group of friends. This list goes from movies that I would say if you want to waste time go watch to give this movie a shot it might make the best movie night with your friends.

Rubber (2010) Comedy/Horror

  • Summary: An english language french independent film. A car tire that comes to life with psychokinetic powers that make people explode and goes on a murderous rampage through the Californian desert.
  • Thoughts: Not even half way through many people stoped watching. The movie wasn’t that amusing and very slow so it made me wonder why I stayed and finished watching. Parts of the movie were okay but very little was intriguing. If you have nothing better to do and are in the mood to waste time watching a movie I would say watch a killer tire. -1/10
  • Host Thoughts: Rubber was probably one of the worst experiences of my life and to put it lightly I was pretty drunk going into the movie. Even the inebriation of alcohol could save this film and make it somewhat enjoyable. I felt bored of the whole movie and there was no real premise that brought the movie together. The only enjoyment was seeing people get killed by the killer tire by staring at it and having their heads explode. 0.5/10

Jack Frost (1997) Horror/Comedy

  • Summary: American direct-to-video film. After an accident that left murderer Jack Frost dead in genetic material the vengeful killer returns as a murderous snowman to exact his revenge on the man who sent him to be executed.
  • Thoughts: Now this is a holiday movie for the season greetings. It’s an interesting twist on a holiday classic that brought horror with some comedic effect to the plot line. Now this is one that I don’t remember much from so that can tell you that this wasn’t one my most memorable movies. 3/10
  • Host Thoughts: This was definitely one of the more goofy horror movies I have seen and this was one of those movies where I’m on the fence on if the movie was just bad or so bad it’s good. There were a lot of moments that made me laugh but mainly from how dumb the scene was or what a character did. I mean imagine being killed by a killer snowman and all he does is tell you snow puns while he is killing you. Not gonna lie I wouldn’t help but laugh in the moment even at the face of death. There are some highlights of the movie that lean towards the more it’s so bad it’s the good side of the spectrum. 5.5/10

Zombeavers (2014) Horror/Comedy

  • Summary: American film. College friends go on a weekend getaway at a camp ground however it is interrupted when a swarm of zombie beavers start to terrorize them and go on a killing spree.
  • Thoughts: Besides the killing zombeavers this one had a side plot that consisted of in group friendship drama. This drama between the friends and their boyfriends gave a bit more suspense to the plot line. Overall this movie wasn’t the worst movie I have seen and its a great horror movie that doesn’t have too much gore. However, I did get upset when the dog got sacrificed in the middle of the movie. 4.5/10 losing half a point because they killed off the dog.
  • Host Thoughts: I wasn’t really expecting much from this film but I was surprised with how much I got to enjoy this film. There really is no setup to everything and no real plot of the film but that doesn’t take away from all the so bad its good concept of this movie. The use of puppets being the zombeavers only added to the charm of this film and was a pretty enjoyable experience I caught myself laughing from time to time. 5.8/10

ThanksKilling (2008) Horror/Slasher

  • Summary: American independent film. 5 college students go on a camping trip in the woods and are excited for thanksgiving. However while in the forest they come across a killer turkey who speaks in thanksgiving puns. They must find a way to ward off the turkey to end the curse of thanksgiving.
  • Thoughts: The perfect Thanksgiving holiday movie for those that like horror movies. There is a sequel to this movie so for those that want to watch multiple movies about a killer turkey this is the film series for you. It is a bit sexual so keep that in mind, other than that this movie kept you engaged with how the turkey was able to get away with the murderous rampage. 6/10
  • Host Thoughts: Thankskilling has become a yearly tradition for me to watch with friends in November because it really is one of the few thanksgiving movies out there that you can enjoy. This film was made by college students on a college budget so I can appreciate it a bit more than regular films and this film really deserves to be seen. It may not be the best film in the world with a real good plot but with all the goofy things that happen in the film I would say this is a must watch at least once. 7.2/10

Troll 2 (1990) Horror/Comedy

  • Summary: Independent film. When young Joshua learns that he will be going on vacation with his family to a small town called Nilbog, he protests adamantly. He is warned by the spirit of his deceased grandfather that goblins populate the town. His parents, Michael and Diana, dismiss his apprehensions, but soon learn to appreciate their son’s warnings. Guided by his grandfather’s ghost, will Joshua and his family stand a chance in fighting off these evil beings?
  • Thoughts: Now this movie made no sense to me while watching but it made up for the amusement by random scenes. One scene that made up for it was just a character randomly being transformed into a tree just for witnessing a girl being turned into green gloob. Or how another character dies by suffocation of popcorn. or how meat is the poison of the goblins. With each scene I thought the movie was easily fun to watch and definitely would watch it again. 7/10
  • Host Thoughts: This was one of the more obscure movies I have ever seen in my entire life. There is so much in the movie that either makes no sense or some sense at all. This is one of the most notorious movies that is part of the you have to see this at least once because it’s so bad it’s good movies. One famous line that most people can quote from this movie if they have seen it is “You can’t piss on hospitality” and this quote is even better because in the context of the film it was during a scene when the family was eating at dinner. 6.7/10

Samurai Cop (1991) Action/Crime

  • Summary: American direct-to-video film. A bitter samurai cop Joe Marshall and his sidekick Frank Washington intend to get their revenge and bravely try to go after the Yakuza.
  • Thoughts: There is a lot of just random parts of dialogue, facial expression, or play on words that will make you laugh. You can be watching a scene that was supposed to be so serious but just made you laugh uncontrollable. Other scenes went so slow where in parts people were dying but took a century to actually die. There was also one scene where this man was on fire and the cops were like ‘he’s burning, he’s burning, do something, we gotta do something” but took a while to get out of the car and grab what was needed. Through this whole movie you can also tell about the budgeting costs that went into this film. 5/10
  • Host Thoughts: I was introduced to this movie by my dad because we both watch this youtube group called RedLetterMedia who covered it on their channel. He bought the movie and we gave it a watch and this movie has its moments but there are a lot of problems with this film that are fun to point out and laugh at. To put in perspective throughout the whole movie you can see the filter change from the camera in almost every scene of the movie. Fun fact about the movie as well with the main character Joe Marshall, you can tell in different scenes where it’s his real hair and when he is wearing a wig to keep the mullet look throughout the movie. One of the most famous parts of the movie that always makes me laugh is during the final fight of the movie the environment of the scene changes at least 5 times when the camera shifts between shots to show a different angle of the fight. Overall I think there is some enjoyment from this film but when I showed my friends this movie they all hated it lol. 5.2/10

The VelociPastor (2017) Horror/Comedy

  • Summary: American film. After losing his parents, a priest travels to China, where he inherits a mysterious ability that allows him to turn into a dinosaur. Although he is horrified by the new power, a sex worker convinces him to use it to fight crime.
  • Thoughts: Best scene out of this whole movie to me is when Doug Jones (the priest) is fighting ninjas as the velocipastor. Very comedic and definitely has some good laughs and has random scenes at times. The combination of religious salvation turned into evil plans, ninjas, and a killing dino should be all the reason for you to watch this movie. 6.5/10 the Dino effect
  • Host Thoughts: This film is what I would categorize as a hidden gem in the film industry. This film was so much fun to watch and definitely a great film to watch with friends and to enjoy the goofiness of this film. You can tell this movie was just made to be bad and is used to poke fun at directors who just made really bad films but this gem went above and beyond to bring fun into this film. Definitely one of the most nonsensical movies I have ever seen but when I watched this with a lot of friends we all had a great time. 6/10

Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky (1991) Action/Comedy

  • Summary: Adopted movie from a manga. Riki is incarcerated into a corrupt prison for assault and manslaughter. In this prison each prisoner who doesn’t have connection with the warden are treated like slaves and even killed/injured for going against the warden. Riki must take down the corruption of the prison and help the prisoners around him and set them free with his superhuman strength.
  • Thoughts: The action and gore to this movie is so unrealistic that it makes you want to keep watching. The random deaths and torture make no sense along with the inhuman strength and healing powers that the main character has. The most famous scene is when Ricky is in a fight and his competitor stabs and rips open his own stomach and uses his intestines to choke Ricky (that isn’t even the goriest scene from the movie). This is what I mean by the gore is very bloody and unrealistic but it is still very fun to watch because of how ridiculous the film is shown. 7.5/10
  • Host Thoughts: This is definitely one of my all time favorite films of all time. This was another movie my dad showed me and it is one of the most ridiculous films of all time and this is one of those cases where the movie is legitimately enjoyable. This movie is based on a manga that got adapted to a movie. There are multiple versions of this film in terms of language but the one you have to watch this movie in is in English. Original is in japanese which is still a great movie but the English dub of the movie adds so much more enjoyment to this movie. This movie’s gore and violence are so ridiculous that you can’t help but laugh and think back on the moment. I showed this movie to my friends and they all loved the film and even thanked me for showing them this masterpiece. If you ever come across this movie please I recommend you give this movie a watch in the english dub. To put in perspective when Riki is getting his xray taken at the prison the officers sees 5 bullets in his chest and ask why hasn’t gotten them removed and he answers with this “Souvenirs”. 9.2/10

Kung Pow! Enter the Fist (2002) Comedy/Action

  • Summary: Writer-director Steve Oedekerk acquired the little known 1976 Hong Kong karate flick “Savage Killers,” then seamlessly blended portions of the film with new material he has directed to create a wild, off-the-wall, comedy feature film. Oedekerk wrote, directed and starred in “Enter The Fist,” placing himself digitally into the old film, re-dubbing the characters, as well as shooting new scenes.
  • Thoughts: This is definitely a parody movie that I would recommend for people to see. Its hilarious and ridiculous that you won’t know what to expect next. Now if this isn’t a movie you want to see the best scenes are: the one with the one boob women, the martial art scene where the main character fights a cow, and the one where the main lead just punches a whole in someone killing them. 8/10
  • Host Thoughts: If you haven’t seen this movie, think about any form of kung fu movie you have seen. Now try to think about every possible way you can parody these kung fu movies. This is how I see Kung Pow Enter the Fist. The director basically took scenes from kung fu movies and edited himself into these scenes and even changing the dialogue by redubbing over everything in the film. This was such a goofy film and I had a good time watching it and it was fun pointing out a lot of the parody aspects of the film when watching it. There were a ton of edited in scenes that made no sense and just made the movie feel more ridiculous to experience but in a fun way. If you like old kung fu movies and I would give this one a watch. 6.1/10

Now this is a movie that my friends and I would fully recommend that should be on your movie watchlist:

Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) Comedy/Adventure

  • Summary: A comedic send-up of the grim circumstances of the Middle Ages as told through the story of King Arthur. When the mythical king of the Britons leads his knights on a quest for the Holy Grail, they face a wide array of horrors, including a persistent Black Knight, a three-headed giant, a cadre of shrubbery-challenged knights, the perilous Castle Anthrax, a killer rabbit, a house of virgins, and a handful of rude Frenchmen.
  • Thoughts: Watching this movie you need to have an open mind to everything. Many things won’t make sense but that is what makes it hilarious. It’s a mixture of live acting and graphic art, which the artistry is very good and still fits in with the aesthetics of the movie. One of the most favorable things my roommate loves from this movie is the scenes with the knights who say ni, screaming “Niiiii” all the time. 8.5/10
  • Host Thoughts: If you have never seen this film, do yourself a favor and please go watch this film. This film is a holy grail on its own to watch. This is probably one of the most iconic films of all time and one of the most quotable movies ever made. There is not one boring part of this film at all and the creators behind the film made sure to make this one of the more enjoyable films based on a real story in history. There are so many elements of the film that make this rewatchable at any point in your life and the amount of times I quote the movie to myself, friends, and family is actually unbelievable. To real movie critics this movie may seem like a jumble mess and they would probably be like “ThIs MoViE mAkEs No SeNse” but hey no offense but those critics have no taste in movies and might also have no sense of humor and only think about despair and hatred in their lives. Again if you haven’t seen this movie please do it and learn every memorable quote you can. 8.7/10

Special thanks to Ashton Mutnansky the best movie host and taco dip maker ever.

Most of these I have never heard of and the titles just cracked me up. Monty Python and the Holy Grail was a fav of my high school friends, so I have many fond memories of watching it with them.
